SUMMARY:In-person event: Why Everyone Is Needed
DESCRIPTION:Attend this free talk by James Shepherd\, a practitioner of Christian Science healing from Eugene\, Oregon. Sharing examples of healing from his own life and professional practice of Christian Science\, Shepherd will explain why Christian Science is both Christian and scientific\, meaning that people can prove its effectiveness for themselves. \n_______________________________________________________________________ \nAbout James Shepherd\n \nFrom James:\n“God’s love is for everyone\, and a Christian Science lecture is a perfect setting to learn about God’s love and the healing that it brings. \n\nJames has seen the healing effects of God’s love since he was a youngster\, romping through the woods around his home with his three brothers. They had their share of scrapes and bruises which were quickly healed through prayer. On the rare occasions they felt sick\, they relied on Christian Science for quick healings. \nIn high school his family moved to a ranch where they had cattle\, horses\, sheep\, pigs\, chickens\, and turkeys. He graduated from college with a Bachelor’s degree in agriculture\, but realized that serving as a Christian Science healer was the best way he could serve others. He left the ranch and took up the full-time work of helping others find healing through prayer. Thirty years later\, he still loves this work as much as ever. \nOver the years\, James has enjoyed being active in many roles in his local Church of Christ\, Scientist\, and has worked at summer camps for Christian Scientists and their friends. He has also shared the message of Love’s transforming power in prison settings and youth detention centers. When his four children were little\, he coached their sports programs. He finds other ways to help his community\, such as by volunteering at a neighborhood church to help cook a free breakfast for those in need. \nJames loves spending time with his family and doing any outdoor activity. But his greatest joy will always be to find\, and to help others find\, a more tangible sense of God’s love for everyone and how that improves every aspect of our lives.” \n\n  \n\n______________________________________________________________________ \nPublic transportation: Metrobus routes 18S\, 18G\, 18H\, 18D; Fairfax Connector routes 310\, 321\, 322. \nMore info: 703.941.7540   csspringfield.org \nSponsored by First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Springfield\, Virginia \n______________________________________________________________________ \nYou are invited!\nThe Christian Science churches in the Washington Metro area provide many inspirational and uplifting events throughout the year. SUMMARY:In-person Event: Finding Trust in a Changing World
DESCRIPTION:How can we stand on a ground that continues to move?\nWith change being such a constant force in life these days\, what can we confidently depend on? \nHere Christian Science speaker and healer Leslie Pitts share examples of how a loving\, divine presence — available to all — can bring the kind of reliable stability and support one can depend on. \n___________________________________________ \nAbout Lesley Pitts\n \n“It was during high school that the direction of my life changed\,” explained Lesley. Although I was raised as a Christian Scientist\, it wasn’t until I experienced the joy of helping someone during a youth club outing that I finally understood what it took to love unselfishly. This set me on a new path. I became aware that nursing qualities of willing service\, patience\, gentleness\, and compassion were expressed all around me as I grew up and that I wanted to live them\, too. They’ve woven themselves into every activity I’ve undertaken since then. \nFor example\, I served as a Christian Science nurse for more than 30 years\, mostly in the United Kingdom. This work brought me to the United States to work at the Church’s Boston headquarters in the Christian Science Nursing Activities department. Later\, I was part of the team that established The Mary Baker Eddy Library. My nursing qualities were put to good use in organizing and caring for its collections–shared with the public for the first time.  I served as Executive Manager and President of the Library for six years. \nMary Baker Eddy wrote the groundbreaking book\, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures\, which explains Christian Science and how it opens the present applicability and healing message of the Bible. Working at the Library and becoming more familiar with Eddy’s remarkable accomplishments as the founder of a religious movement increased my desire to better practice Christian Science in my own life and help others through my healing practice. \nLack of trust in what used to be reliable sources or entities is common today\, but I believe that trust in God is a stronger foundation to base our lives upon. The unusual career path I’ve pursued points to this trust. Relying upon a deeper relationship with God naturally helps us support each other\, and to better our world. All of us can contribute in this way as we engage in a deeper relationship with our divine source.” \n_______________________________________________________________________ \nPublic transportation: served by MetroBus routes 18J\, 18G\, 18H\, 18P; Fairfax Connector routes 310\, 321\, 322. \nMore information:  703.941.7540 \nSponsored by First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, Springfield\, Virginia.
