SUMMARY:In-person event: How to Make Change for the Better
DESCRIPTION:Have you asked yourself who you really are?\nOr why you are here? Can you really find peace and happiness? Do you need a change for the better? If so\, do you know what is needed to achieve these changes? \nSpeaker Janet Hegarty left uncertainty behind after finding a spiritual basis for joy.  When her mother-in-law gave her a special book\, Janet began to see herself in a whole new way. \n \n“Never before had I encountered the idea of God as pure goodness\,” she said. \nAs Janet studied this book\, she began to discover that this same all-good God was the source of what she was and what everyone really is\, without exception. This changed her life profoundly\, showing her how the power of divine goodness was at work in her life:  It provided solutions to challenges including sickness\, dishonesty\, and career setbacks\, which often seemed like they could shake her foundation and her connection to what’s good. \nThis power of divine goodness had another practical effect\, too\, bringing her quick healing of a long-standing food allergy. \nThe special book that Janet Hegarty’ mother-in-law gave her was the Christian Science textbook\, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy\, which spiritually interprets the Bible in a timeless\, practical way. \n_______________________________________________________________________ \nAbout Janet Hegarty\n \nAs an undergraduate\, I studied music composition at Washington University in St. Louis. Then\, I moved to Chicago\, where I earned a master’s degree in music. At about the same time\, I was introduced to Christian Science and began finding the answers to my questions about identity\, purpose\, and health. This has made a huge difference in my life. \nFor the next several years\, I composed and produced original music for theatre productions and film. Later\, my husband\, Jim\, and I had a music production company\, producing music for radio\, television\, and other media. \nThroughout this time\, I continued to apply the spiritual ideas I was learning to every facet of my life. My growing understanding of the way Christian Science explains existence took the mystery out of living and removed much fear. This new light so changed my life that it stirred in me a desire to help others find spiritual answers. I left the music business in 1994 to enter the full-time Christian Science healing practice\, and in 2009 I became a Christian Science teacher. \nMy life has been transformed from living in fear for my health and uncertainty about the future to feeling secure in the spiritual basis for health and having a joyous expectation of good in the future. This transformation showed me the life-changing power of God’s goodness and the healing that results from understanding our oneness with God. These ideas have been useful to me in my healing work\, and I love sharing them in my prison ministry\, with interfaith groups\, and in the public talks I give on Christian Science. \nThis is the third in a series of three talks. Check out the events on March 10 and March 17. \nMore information: 202.726.6776

SUMMARY:In-person event: Finding Trust in a Changing World
DESCRIPTION:How can we stand on a ground that continues to move?\nWith change being such a constant force in life these days\, what can we confidently depend on? \nHear Christian Science speaker and healer Lesley Ruth Pitts share examples of how a loving\, divine presence — available to all — can bring the kind of reliable stability and support one can depend on. \n___________________________________________ \nAbout Lesley Pitts\n \n“It was during high school that the direction of my life changed\,” explained Lesley. Although I was raised as a Christian Scientist\, it wasn’t until I experienced the joy of helping someone during a youth club outing that I finally understood what it took to love unselfishly. This set me on a new path. I became aware that nursing qualities of willing service\, patience\, gentleness\, and compassion were expressed all around me as I grew up and that I wanted to live them\, too. They’ve woven themselves into every activity I’ve undertaken since then. \nFor example\, I served as a Christian Science nurse for more than 30 years\, mostly in the United Kingdom. This work brought me to the United States to work at the Church’s Boston headquarters in the Christian Science Nursing Activities department. Later\, I was part of the team that established The Mary Baker Eddy Library. My nursing qualities were put to good use in organizing and caring for its collections–shared with the public for the first time.  I served as Executive Manager and President of the Library for six years. \nMary Baker Eddy wrote the groundbreaking book\, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures\, which explains Christian Science and how it opens the present applicability and healing message of the Bible. Working at the Library and becoming more familiar with Eddy’s remarkable accomplishments as the founder of a religious movement increased my desire to better practice Christian Science in my own life and help others through my healing practice. \nLack of trust in what used to be reliable sources or entities is common today\, but I believe that trust in God is a stronger foundation to base our lives upon. The unusual career path I’ve pursued points to this trust. Relying upon a deeper relationship with God naturally helps us support each other\, and to better our world. All of us can contribute in this way as we engage in a deeper relationship with our divine source.” \nThis is the second in a series of three talks. Check out the events on March 10 and April 7. \nMore information: 202.726.6776

SUMMARY:In-person event: Giving freely of ourselves and what we all gain
DESCRIPTION:When we feel overwhelmed by life’s problems\, we may want to try to get more from the world\, says speaker Melanie Wahlberg\, a practitioner of Christian Science healing from Lake Forest\, California. But when we do the opposite — give more of ourselves or focus on the God-given qualities we already have to express or contribute\, we find that we end up not lacking anything. Really\, we gain the unexpected good of joy\, health\, and strength that move our lives and the world forward. \n_______________________________________________________________________ \nAbout Melanie Wahlberg\nTwo influences that Melanie will never forget were the Christian Science Sunday School and a mom who turned to prayer and encouraged her to do the same. These influences showed her something of the reliability of God and spiritual inspiration\, and trusting this helped her find her way growing up. Significant healing experiences with relationship and food issues\, and violence in the community\, were also unforgettable. From this\, Melanie got an idea of the many ways that Christian Science can transform lives. \nAfter finishing a doctorate in mathematics\, Melanie became a college professor and truly enjoyed teaching. She found that teaching was less about telling students something than facilitating the students’ discoveries of new concepts. There was nothing better than witnessing a reluctant student realize that a previously mystifying concept was actually within reach to anyone. \nBut the higher promise of Christian Science beckoned her to help people redeem and uplift their lives in a fuller way. When students came to her office for help with calculus\, Melanie and her students often found themselves talking about the joy and excitement of growing spirituality.  After just two years at the college\, Melanie resigned from her position and began accepting calls as a Christian Science practitioner. She wrote articles for the Christian Science periodicals\, was a frequent guest on Sentinel radio\, and began advertising her practice in The Christian Science Journal in 2004. She and her husband also started a family. \nMelanie loves working from her home office in the Los Angeles area. She likes to see lives transformed by the healing ideas of Christian Science\, where we ourselves are helped and\, at the same time\, find we can help others. Her life as a mom has a lot of the same focus. And whether the spiritual ideas apply to health issues\, school\, social lives\, or sports\, her three kids push her to “keep it real.” \n\n____________________________________________________________________ \nThis is the first in a series of three talks.
