SUMMARY:In-person event: Why everyone is needed
DESCRIPTION:We each have an unbreakable connection to an all-good\, all-loving God. In this free talk\, James Shepherd\, a practitioner of Christian Science healing from Eugene\, Oregon\, will discuss how seeing that brings progress\, hope\, and resolution to all kinds of challenges our families\, communities\, and nations are facing today. We are all needed to live the basic concept of “loving your neighbor” — a shared value uniting the Abrahamic religions\, other faiths\, and all people.\n_______________________________________________________________________ \nAbout James Shepherd\n \nFrom James:\n“God’s love is for everyone\, and a Christian Science lecture is a perfect setting to learn about God’s love and the healing that it brings. \n\nJames has seen the healing effects of God’s love since he was a youngster\, romping through the woods around his home with his three brothers. They had their share of scrapes and bruises which were quickly healed through prayer. On the rare occasions they felt sick\, they relied on Christian Science for quick healings. \nIn high school his family moved to a ranch where they had cattle\, horses\, sheep\, pigs\, chickens\, and turkeys. He graduated from college with a Bachelor’s degree in agriculture\, but realized that serving as a Christian Science healer was the best way he could serve others. He left the ranch and took up the full-time work of helping others find healing through prayer. Thirty years later\, he still loves this work as much as ever. \nOver the years\, James has enjoyed being active in many roles in his local Church of Christ\, Scientist\, and has worked at summer camps for Christian Scientists and their friends. He has also shared the message of Love’s transforming power in prison settings and youth detention centers. When his four children were little\, he coached their sports programs. He finds other ways to help his community\, such as by volunteering at a neighborhood church to help cook a free breakfast for those in need. \nJames loves spending time with his family and doing any outdoor activity. But his greatest joy will always be to find\, and to help others find\, a more tangible sense of God’s love for everyone and how that improves every aspect of our lives.” \n\n  \n\n______________________________________________________________________ \nChild care will be available. Plenty of free parking.\nPublic transportation: Metrorail to Rockville Metro station (Red line) to Ride-on bus #54 to West Montgomery Avenue and Adclare Road bus station. Cross the street of West Montgomery Avenue and walk down Nelson Street for approximately 5 minutes. \nMore information: 301.762.8222 or ChristianScienceRockville@gmail.com \nhttps://www.christianscience.com/lecturers/james-shepherd?jwsource=cl

SUMMARY:In-person (and online audio) event: Meaningful change for ourselves and the world
DESCRIPTION:Individuals\, communities\, and our world are under pressure to address challenges such as violence\, intimidation\, division\, and even our health. Mark McCurties\, a practitioner of Christian Science healing from Ann Arbor Michigan will give a talk that explores how a different view of God’s love can change and transform us so we can confront issues such as bullying and see restoration of character. \n_______________________________________________________________________ \nAbout Mark McCurties\n \nEver since he was a little boy\, Mark had a deep love for the Bible. When he read about men and women in the Bible overcoming hatred\, famine\, war\, physical disease\, and other hardships\, their triumphs inspired him. It didn’t matter what the odds were\, or what conditions they faced\, individuals in the Bible seemed to flourish in adversity based on one common theme: their deep love for God. \nGrowing up in a Christian Science household\, there was another book that Mark loved to read daily: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures written by Mary Baker Eddy. The very purpose of her book is to help unlock and reveal the deeper divine meaning and inspiration of the Bible. Together the Bible and Science and Health point to the practical healing and saving power of God and its present availability for all mankind. Mark knew that someday he wanted to share that healing message with the world. \nAs he grew into adulthood\, experiences in the field of education as a summer camp director\, outdoor educator\, athletics coach\, and resident counselor all helped to develop his understanding and practice of Christian Science. While working with young people\, Mark had multiple opportunities to witness God’s healing power. These examples proved to him that the healing power of the Christ is just as alive and relevant today as for the men and women of the Bible. In 2010\, with a desire to focus solely on healing through prayer\, Mark entered the full-time public practice of Christian Science. \n\n_______________________________________________________ \nMark says\, “We all have a natural desire to improve ourselves and the world around us. In my own life I’ve found that letting God\, divine Love\, guide and direct my efforts brings permanent and meaningful results.” \nWe encourage you to attend this talk in-person. It will also be live-streamed (audio only)\, at zoom.us and via phone at 301.715.8592\, meeting ID: 208 100 7777\, passcode: 7880\,  participant ID: #. The talk will also be available for on-demand replay; please check back for details. \nMore information: 301.762.7049 or christiansciencerockville.org \n

SUMMARY:In-person event: Be Set Free
DESCRIPTION:To live a life of liberty\, Nicole Virgil\, a practitioner of Christian Science healing\, says that we have to find the nature and substance of liberty\, which is given to all. We have to know where to look for the source of liberty—God\, good itself\, all-inclusive. \nThis talk will examine liberty from a Biblical perspective; and the speaker will give examples of how people today found their freedom from all kinds of physical\, emotional and circumstantial restrictions that seemed clearly beyond their control\, until they were set free. \n_______________________________________________________________________ \nAbout Nicole Virgil\n \nFrom Nicole:\n“My father was a free-lance church organist\, and my parents attended services at almost every different Christian church around New England. Mom was constantly wanting to understand how to practice Christian healing just as Jesus did\, and when she started attending Christian Science church services\, she found what she was looking for. As a result\, I had a wonderful upbringing in Christian Science\, which cultivated within me a deep desire for an intimate relationship with God. \nGrowing up\, I studied Christian Science with my mom and music with my dad\, and found that both studies were helpful to each other. Christian Science healed performance anxiety\, while learning music honed the skills I needed for spiritual practice — skills such as intuition\, listening\, patience and diligence. Throughout my life\, Christian Science and music have always overlapped: After studying opera at music school\, I took my one-woman opera review program (That Can’t Be Opera!) on the road\, educating audiences about opera by singing Mozart\, Puccini\, and Menotti. Christian Science guided me through this entrepreneurial endeavor\, just as it led me to start soloing in churches as a teenager (which is something I still love to do!) — and I eventually married\, started a family with my husband\, and entered the public practice of Christian Science so that I can share the deep and precious truths of the Bible’s healing messages for our daily lives. \nToday I enjoy raising children\, gardening\, soloing in church\, and witnessing the healing effect of Christian Science in all things. ” \n______________________________________________________________________ \nChild care available.\nTransportation: You can arrange a ride from the Rockville Metro station (Red line) by calling 301.762.7049 by Friday\, May 5. \nWant to  come but May 7 isn’t convenient for you? Nicole will be speaking in Falls Church\, Virginia\, on May 6. Details. \nMore information: 301.762.7049 \n______________________________________________________________________ \nYou are invited!\nThe Christian Science churches in the Washington Metro area provide many inspirational and uplifting events throughout the year. These events include lectures\, online webinars\, book talks\, seminars and workshops on the Bible and Christian Science.
