SUMMARY:In-person event: The Science of God and its power to heal us
DESCRIPTION:Misconceptions about ourselves and the world we live in are often corrected by advances in science which bring paradigm shifts to our ways of thinking and understanding existence — like discovering that the earth revolves around the sun\, rather than the other way around. \nIn this free talk\, Nikki O’Hagan\, a practitioner of Christian Science healing from County Kildare\, Ireland\, notes that the current matter-based scientific model leaves many questions unanswered and has some thinkers and scientists questioning if it is still the right model. \nA shift in thought begins with questions such as: How does science relate to God? Is there a science that explains God? Nikki will address these questions and show how the Science of God explains Jesus’ healings and teachings\, makes God knowable and understandable\, and provides humanity with a safe and reliable means for caring for ourselves and each other. \n\n \nAbout Nikki O’Hagan\n\n \n\nFrom Nikki:\n“Nikki grew up in South Africa where she gained a love for being outdoors and enjoying the beauty and promise of nature. From a young age she had a strong desire to not just experience life\, but to understand it. She used to exasperate her dad by following up every explanation he gave her by asking “but\, Why?” While Nikki did grow up attending Christian Science Sunday School\, as a teen she decided that this would not be the way for her to gain the understanding of life that she was seeking\, and she headed off in another direction. \nSeveral years followed in which she desperately tried to find happiness and to understand the Why of life. She looked everywhere and tried everything (even jumping out of an airplane!) but nothing brought answers\, happiness or lasting peace. Rather than finding an understanding of life\, it all seemed to just get darker and make less and less sense. \nAnd then a transformational healing brought her back to Christian Science\, where she found comfort\, peace\, mercy\, happiness\, harmony\, health\, and home in the arms of divine Love. Nikki then discovered that she loved the infallible logic of the Science of Christianity\, and found in it all the answers to her Whys. Life and God finally began to make sense and became full of joy\, light\, and love. Her gratitude for this pivotal healing\, and the salvation it brought her by setting her on the path of Christian Science\, was–and still is–unbounded. Since that time all she has wanted to do is love and serve God\, and love and serve others. \nThrough her study and practice of Christian Science\, Nikki has experienced and witnessed so many healings over the years. Her earnest desire is for all to know the transformational healing power of divine Love. Becoming a Christian Science practitioner was a natural step in fulfilling this desire. \nNikki looks forward to sharing with others\, through the lecturing work\, the subjects most precious and dear to her heart: God and Christian Science.” \n\n\n\n \n\nChild care will be available. \nParking: on-street\, or  a paid parking lot is available behind the Old Stone House museum on M Street\, N.W.\, between 30th and 31st Streets (one block from the church).\nPublic transportation: Metro (Orange/Silver/Blue lines) to Foggy Bottom-GWU station\, then a 15-minute walk. \nMore information:  202.256.3330 or 5thchurchdc@gmail.com \n\n	Notice: JavaScript is required for this content.

SUMMARY:In-person event: The Joy of Beginning with God
DESCRIPTION:Come to this free talk by Mark McCurties\, a practitioner of Christian Science healing from Ann Arbor. Michigan. He will explore how a better understanding of the good that God forever cause\, can help us to experience more of that goodness in the form of health\, peace\, and safety for our world. In the beginning\, from the beginning\, and without beginning\, God is causing good. As loved children of God\, we each have a divine right to feel the effect of that divine goodness in our daily lives. Come learn more about the joy of beginning with God! \n_______________________________________________________________________ \nAbout Mark McCurties\nEver since he was a little boy\, Mark had a deep love for the Bible. When he read about men and women in the Bible overcoming hatred\, famine\, war\, physical disease\, and other hardships\, their triumphs inspired him. It didn’t matter what the odds were\, or what conditions they faced\, individuals in the Bible seemed to flourish in adversity based on one common theme: their deep love for God. \nGrowing up in a Christian Science household\, there was another book that Mark loved to read daily: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures written by Mary Baker Eddy. The very purpose of her book is to help unlock and reveal the deeper divine meaning and inspiration of the Bible. Together the Bible and Science and Health point to the practical healing and saving power of God and its present availability for all mankind. Mark knew that someday he wanted to share that healing message with the world. \nAs he grew into adulthood\, experiences in the field of education as a summer camp director\, outdoor educator\, athletics coach\, and resident counselor all helped to develop his understanding and practice of Christian Science. While working with young people\, Mark had multiple opportunities to witness God’s healing power. These examples proved to him that the healing power of the Christ is just as alive and relevant today as for the men and women of the Bible. In 2010\, with a desire to focus solely on healing through prayer\, Mark entered the full-time public practice of Christian Science. \nThe audio portion of this event will be live-streamed\, at zoom.us/j/89202456412 or via phone at  301.715.8592\, meeting ID 892 0245 6412. \n  \n\n______________________________________________________________________ \nChild care will be available.\nParking: metered on-street parking. \nMark McCurties video \nMore information: 202.333.6650 or 5thchurchdc@gmail.com \n____________________________________________________________________\nYou are invited!\nThe Christian Science churches in the Washington Metro area provide many inspirational and uplifting events throughout the year. SUMMARY:In-person event: Be Set Free
DESCRIPTION:Whatever seems to stand between us and the full range of purposeful activity that we would like to have in our lives\, the real impediment is not knowing how or where to access our God-given liberty from those things which make us feel vulnerable or victimize or overwhelmed or depressed or anxious. \nSpeaker Nicole Virgil\, a practitioner of Christian Science healing\, will examine liberty  from a Biblical perspective and will include examples of how real people today find their freedom from all kinds of physical\, emotional\, and circumstantial restrictions that are clearly beyond their control so that they may Be Set Free! \n_______________________________________________________________________ \nAbout Nicole Virgil\n \nFrom Nicole:\n“My father was a free-lance church organist\, and my parents attended services at almost every different Christian church around New England. Mom was constantly wanting to understand how to practice Christian healing just as Jesus did\, and when she started attending Christian Science church services\, she found what she was looking for. As a result\, I had a wonderful upbringing in Christian Science\, which cultivated within me a deep desire for an intimate relationship with God. \nGrowing up\, I studied Christian Science with my mom and music with my dad\, and found that both studies were helpful to each other. Christian Science healed performance anxiety\, while learning music honed the skills I needed for spiritual practice — skills such as intuition\, listening\, patience and diligence. Throughout my life\, Christian Science and music have always overlapped: After studying opera at music school\, I took my one-woman opera review program (That Can’t Be Opera!) on the road\, educating audiences about opera by singing Mozart\, Puccini\, and Menotti. Christian Science guided me through this entrepreneurial endeavor\, just as it led me to start soloing in churches as a teenager (which is something I still love to do!) — and I eventually married\, started a family with my husband\, and entered the public practice of Christian Science so that I can share the deep and precious truths of the Bible’s healing messages for our daily lives. \nToday I enjoy raising children\, gardening\, soloing in church\, and witnessing the healing effect of Christian Science in all things. ” \n______________________________________________________________________ \nPublic transportation: Metrobus routes 30/32/24/36.. \nChildcare will be available. \nMore information: 202.333.6650  or www.CSGeorgetown.com  \n______________________________________________________________________ \nYou are invited!\nThe Christian Science churches in the Washington Metro area provide many inspirational and uplifting events throughout the year. SUMMARY:In-person event: Giving Freely of Ourselves and What We All Gain
DESCRIPTION:  \nWhen we feel overwhelmed by life’s problems\, we may want to try to get more from the world\, says speaker Melanie Wahlberg\, a practitioner of Christian Science healing from Lake Forest\, California. But when we do the opposite — give more of ourselves or focus on the God-given qualities we already have to express or contribute\, we find that we end up not lacking anything. Really\, we gain the unexpected good of joy\, health\, and strength that move our lives and the world forward. \n \n_______________________________________________________________________ \nAbout Melanie Wahlberg\n \nSays Melanie:\nTwo influences on me that I’ll never forget were the Christian Science Sunday School and a mom who turned to prayer and encouraged me to do the same.  These influences showed me something of the reliability of God and spiritual inspiration\, and trusting this helped me find my way growing up.  Significant healing experiences with relationship and food issues\, and violence in the community\, were also unforgettable.  From this\, I got an idea of the many ways that Christian Science can transform lives. \nAfter finishing a doctorate in mathematics\, I became a college professor and truly enjoyed teaching.  I found that teaching was less about telling students something than facilitating the students’ discoveries of new concepts.  There was nothing better than witnessing a reluctant student realize that a previously mystifying concept was actually within reach to anyone. \nBut the higher promise of Christian Science beckoned me to help people redeem and uplift their lives in a fuller way.  When students came to my office for help with calculus\, we often found ourselves talking about the joy and excitement of growing spirituality.  After just two years at the college\, I resigned from my position and began accepting calls as a Christian Science practitioner. I wrote articles for the Christian Science periodicals\, was a frequent guest on Sentinel radio\, and began advertising my practice in The Christian Science Journal in 2004. My husband and I also started a family. \nThese days I love working from my home office in the Los Angeles area.  I like to see lives transformed by the healing ideas of Christian Science\, where we ourselves are helped and\, at the same time\, find we can help others.  My life as a mom has a lot of the same focus.  And whether the spiritual ideas apply to health issues\, school\, social lives\, or sports\, my three teenagers push me to “keep it real.” \n  \n \n______________________________________________________________________ \nChild care provided.\nPublic transportation: closest Metro stations are Foggy Bottom-GWU (Blue/Orange/Silver lines)\, 18-minute walk; Dupont Circle (Red line)\, 24-minute walk; check map fir directions and bus service. \nFree on-street parking is available with a 2-hour time limit on weeknights until 9pm. Or park at The Old Stone House parking lot on M Street between 30th and 31st Streets — you’ll need to stop-by the church prior to the talk to obtain a parking pass from an usher; the pass expires 15 minutes after the end of the talk. \nMore information: 202.333.6650 or fifthchurch@csgeorgetown.com
