Is Christian Science a Science?
Gauguin's favorite and probably most famous painting, titled "Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?" poses the central questions that all science seeks to answer.
We live in a world of thought. Ideas are thoughts. 2+2=4 is a mathematical idea and therefore not subject to time or space, or dependent on matter to be true. Science is essentially a triumph of reason over the senses, for Science looks beyond the senses to find the Truth. The senses tell us that railroad tracks converge at the horizon, that the sun revolves around the earth, and that objects are solid. Science tells us otherwise.
The essence of Beethoven's great Choral Symphony is in the joy, majesty, and exaltation it brings to the listener. These qualities of Mind, God, are not molecular but spiritual. Music is the language of Soul. In Science and Health, Mary Baker Eddy writes, "Man is the expression of Soul. The Indians caught some glimpses of the underlying reality, when they called a certain beautiful lake 'the smile of the Great Spirit'."
Christian Science presents a deeply spiritual view of life and health. Mrs. Eddy explains:
God, Spirit, is All-in-all, and that there is no other might nor Mind, —that God is Love, and therefore He is divine Principle.
The Creative Principle — Life, Truth, and Love — is God. The universe reflects God. There is but one creator and one creation. This creation consists of the unfolding of spiritual ideas and their identities, which are embraced in the infinite Mind and forever reflected. These ideas range from the infinitesimal to infinity, and the highest ideas are the sons and daughters of God.
